Create a Restore Point Before Uninstalling

By Daniel Carter · Published September 25, 2026 · Updated September 25, 2026

Prepare Windows System Protection and understand what a restore point does and does not preserve.

The word leftover describes location and timing, not safety. A file or registry value that remains after uninstall may be harmless, shared, or contain user data. Evidence and a recovery path should come before deletion.

Prepare a recovery point

On supported Windows configurations, search Start for Create a restore point, open System Protection and check whether protection is enabled for the system drive. Use Create to label the point before major changes.

Limits you need to know

A restore point can help reverse certain system changes; it is not the same as a tested copy of documents, game saves or application profiles. On managed PCs, protection may be disabled by policy. For major migrations or sensitive work data, maintain a separate backup as well.
