Fix Access Denied During Uninstall
Identify file locks, ownership, elevation, security software, and managed-device restrictions.
Troubleshooting should isolate one change at a time. Preserve the exact error, application version, install source, Windows build, and relevant logs. Reinstalling or deleting folders immediately can erase evidence without correcting the cause.
Why access can be denied
Windows may block removal when a file is in use, the account lacks the required permission, a service is running, or a security product protects the target. “Access denied” is not a reason to take ownership of all system files.
Safe troubleshooting order
- Close the target application and restart Windows if required.
- Check whether the device is managed by your workplace or school.
- Run the product's normal uninstall as an authorized administrator when appropriate.
- Use a publisher-provided cleanup utility for antivirus or device drivers.
Do not disable antivirus globally just to force a removal. See running service issues.
