Fix an Uninstall That Is Stuck
Determine whether the process is still working, waiting for input, blocked by a service, or genuinely hung.
Troubleshooting should isolate one change at a time. Preserve the exact error, application version, install source, Windows build, and relevant logs. Reinstalling or deleting folders immediately can erase evidence without correcting the cause.
Why uninstalls can appear stuck
A removal wizard may wait for an application to close, a service to stop, another Windows Installer operation to finish, or Windows to restart. Killing the process too early can leave a partially removed installation.
Check before forcing a stop
- Look for an unseen confirmation dialog behind other windows.
- Save open work and close the target application normally.
- Confirm whether Windows Update or another installer is in progress.
- Allow a normal reboot when the removal wizard requests it.
If the wizard repeatedly hangs after restarting, collect the exact program version and error, then follow broken uninstaller troubleshooting.
